In Africa, particularly in Uganda, we give much more practical meaning to the ritual. We shake hands with the person on one side then do the same on the other side, only then get up. Thus form a bond of ‘brother hood’ of congregation in the mosque. Fills one with the joy, to have been greeted by ‘brothers’. May be they are the angels that do so.
Unfortunately ‘sisters’ still pray separately!
