Jin O Ins

When we look at the phrase al-jini wal-insi, it seems logical to think that these two attributes are presented together as being either similar or opposites.

The root for the word jinn is (jeem nun nun) meaning “veiled / concealed / covered / hid / protected (e.g. cloth, armour, grave, shield), invisible, become dark / possessed, darkness of night, bereft of reason, mad/insane/unsound in mind / intellect, confusedness. Become thick / full-grown / blossom, herbage, garden. Spiritual beings that conceal themselves from the senses (including angels), become weak and abject, greater part of mankind, devil / demon, people who are peerless having no match or equal, a being who is highly potent, sometimes refers to Kings because they are concealed from the common folk.”

The root for the word ins is (alif nun siin) meaning “to be or become sociable, companionable, conversable, inclined to company or conversation, friendly, amicable, or familiar. To be or become cheered, or gladdened or cheerful, gay, or gladsome. To be or become at ease, or tranquil; without shrinking or aversion.”

To me the jinn and ins speak to the societal norms adopted by the groups of people. Taliban and other fundamentalist groups showcase the jinn mindset, while societies that struggle for human rights and collective governance showcase the ins mindset.

There are about 10 verses (if I counted correctly) in the Quran where the phrase al-jini wal-insi or al-insi wal-jini is used:

6:112 Remember, We have appointed to every Prophet enemies. The rebellious (shayatina) among the urban and the rural populations rose in opposition, (since the Message struck at their personal interests.) They plotted and inspired each other with fancy words. If your Sustainer willed, they would not do that. Disregard them and whatever they fabricate.

6:130 O You, assembly of the nomads and the urbanites! Did not Messengers come to you from among yourselves, conveyed to you My messages and warned you of the meeting of this your Day? They will say, "We testify against ourselves.” Pursuit of only the worldly life preoccupied their hearts and minds. They will bear witness against themselves that they disregarded the truth.

7:38 God will command them to join the previous uncivilized and civilized communities into the fire. Every later group will blame the earlier one, "Our Sustainer! These are the ones who misled us; double their punishment.” He will say, “Doubled for all”: but this you do not know. [The first group violated the laws and misled others, and the second group was guilty of blind following and misleading their successors]

7:179 We have committed to Hell numerous people, rural and urban (they are living a life of hell). They have hearts that they use not to understand. They have eyes with which they see not, and they have ears with which they hear not. They are like cattle. Nay, they are further astray. Such are the ones who have chosen to live in the darkness of ignorance.

27:17 Solomon’s army included warrior tribes of the woods and the mountains, dwellers of townships, and great riders of the tribe of Taer. They were well disciplined, and dedicated to any appointed mission.

41:25 (In the life of the world) We assigned them comrades who made pleasing to them their present and past actions. And so, the Word has come to pass for them as it did concerning the communities that lived before them, among the rural and the urban. They all are losers. [The Divine law so applied to them. 43:36. ‘Birds of the same feather flock together’]

41:29 And the deniers will say, "Our Sustainer! Show us those, among the nomads and the urban, who misled us. We will trample them under our feet so that they become utterly disgraced."

46:18 Such are the ones against whom the Word came to pass among the previous generations of the rural and the urban. They will surely be lost!

51:56 And I have not created the ‘jinn’ and the ‘ins’ but that they obey (serve) Me alone. [Jinn = Nomads. Ins = Urbanites. Check Surah 72 Al-Jinn, author’s note, for details. Ibadah is usually translated as worship but in that sense it applies better to idol-worship. And since the Qur’an consistently promotes action over ritual, Ibadah means obeying God by serving His creation]

55:33 O Communities of the nomads and the urban! If you can break through the fences of the heavens and earth, then, break through. Never can you break through without an authority (which you won’t have). Can you bring any evidence?
