4:23 and First Cousin Marriages

Salaams everyone,

Have any of you here ever re-evaluated the traditional understanding and translation of 4:23 regarding marriage between first cousins and the implications of genetic recessive when practiced over generations?

I am looking forward to everyone's replies.

The exclusions listed in 4:23 are very explicit, conversely inclusions are left to our own preferences.

4:23 The following women are prohibited for you in marriage:
Your mothers,
father's sisters,
mother's sisters,
brother's daughters,
sister's daughters,
foster-mothers who have ever nursed you,
your wives' mothers,
your step-daughters, unless you have divorced their mother without being intimate with her.

Also forbidden are women who have ever been the wives of your sons.

You are not allowed to keep two sisters in wedlock at one time except what has already happened in the past.

God is Forgiving, Merciful.

This was looked at and deemed OK for couples where there were no previous familial marriages and inappropriate if there had been.

Someone gave this rendition of verse 4:23,

[You are not allowed to make agreements with the states or parties/groups that your basic nation have made an agreement with and every small or big state that is on the same wavelength and of one mind with the basic nation. Or states of dignified people, and states and subgroups that are under their supervision - and the basic groups that are under your training, and those groups that are trained with you, and subgroups of those groups that are under their supervision.

And you cannot deal with these states that had under their supervision novice-groups that you caused trouble with in relation to commands/ laws. And if you were not causing any trouble there is no prohibition. And you are also allowed to make agreements with your abna Qawm that are your strength and potency. And it is also allowed to unite two similar parties
Except the first has passed surely the Mumliqate Elahya provide rahmat and protection]

This thoroughly confused me as the Messenger, we are told, made peace treaties with pagans and the Quran says to abide by your treaties, so how do we not associate with people and have treaties with them?

9:4 Except those idolaters with whom you have a treaty and they have not subsequently failed you, nor have they helped others against you. You shall fulfill your treaty with them until their term. God loves those who are mindful of His laws. [9:3-5]

Brother Damon,

I'm not sure whether you saw the thread at Our Beacon Forum on this topic. If not, there is some discussion.

Salaam and thank you.
